IXUS designers interview-10 years of IXUS
The following is a transcript of an interview that we received from Canon Europe. According to Yasushi: "at the beginning of the project we had a short minimal. Product engineers gave us a set of specifications to work, they told us the target weight and size of the camera and from which we started to create the first mock-up. When someone give a piece of paper and ask them to draw a camera will draw a box and a circle. That is the simplest, the most iconic image of a camera that exists in everyone's mind. "

Seiichi Omino-Designer of the first Canon Digital IXUS
"The box and the circle is the key concept of an IXUS camera. Staying true to that concept for the Digital IXUS was one of our key design challenges. The difference between building a traditional camera and a digital camera is that, due to the placement of the battery in a digital camera, you cannot position the optical axis in the Center. We watched the ample space in the Centre of the camera and thought very hard about how to embed the key without losing a sense of balance. We have found that when we moved only slightly the circle from the Center, added to the character of the camera. This circle of decentralization was to define the appearance for the new generation of Digital IXUS models. "

"APS was a brand new system, so we wanted IXUS to have a new look. Canon had always used aluminium for their cameras, but in this case we wanted to use a different material, stainless steel. Using stainless steel created a series of new problems for the mechanical Department; they faced a great challenge in making a camera to work with a compact size. Research and development had to work very hard to meet our needs. But I didn t see their work. I deliberately avoided contact with the Department of R&D, because this will remain true to our vision and prevent a dilute consensus view. So we have not given them any feedback, we have simply asked them to develop a camera that would fit within our design pattern ".

Seiichi Omino-inspired by vintage cameras
"Always we were trying to make the camera more compact. With the Digital IXUS we achieved a reduction of 50% volume and weight of 70% from the previous Canon digital camera. The IXUS design is very inspired by vintage cameras. In cameras, attention to detail in each component is clearly visible. This is not always possible to recreate the era of mass production. But with IXUS we wanted to create a mass-market camera where the design of each element shows real craftsmanship. Technologies and materials of the surface can change, but the basics of IXUS won t change. The design box and circle is an integral part of the mark. That will always stay the same. "

Yasushi Shiotani-hits the & fashion accessory of high-quality camera
"Before we started the design process, which we asked all the women of the Department if we could observe the contents of their handbags. We found that they contained a lot of elements. Looking closely at the size, look and feel of these things, we began to get an idea of the type of objects that women feel comfortable carrying around. We decided to develop a camera that would fit in a bag lady s; that would be an accessory of fashion affects both a high quality camera. The Canon logo is normally placed horizontally through the camera, but with IXUS we placed vertically. This means that you can read the logo when the camera is attached to the neck of someone s. This gives a different message on camera as an object of fashion. When we were designing the IXUS, I was more interested in emphasizing the unique design quality of each individual component, rather than focusing too much on harmony of the global object. I wanted to create a new design concept, where each component justifies its existence. This is not a luxury product, but has a feeling of luxury. Expect goods expensive to have a good design, with a cheaper product that sometimes you sacrifice. But we have three elements with IXUS strong: good design, precious materials and an affordable price. "
